DA Red Corner

DA Red Corner is a typeface inspired by the cover of Red Corner (1989), the album by the Italian pop group Matia Bazar. The project stems from research on the graphic language of Italian record covers from the 1970s and 1980s, a period when lettering often served as a visual extension of the music itself. In this case, the original type, with its sharp and geometric structure, has been reinterpreted digitally to recover the constructive essentiality and modernist tension that defined that visual season.

Morphologically, the typeface features a geometric sans serif structure, with uniform main strokes and decisively cut terminals, sometimes abruptly closed to emphasize the contrast between vertical and horizontal lines. The letters are based on regular forms but include subtle corrective details that introduce rhythm and character: the crossbar of the “A” rises slightly, the “M” takes on a compact and vertical stance, the “R” stands out for its ascending leg, while the “Z” reveals a dynamic inclination. The curves of “B” and “S” appear compressed, suggesting a sense of contained tension typical of display typography.

Designed for titles, covers, exhibition design, packaging, and visual identities, DA Red Corner balances constructive rigor and stylistic flair, with controlled proportions and a design that evokes the dialogue between graphic design, music, and Italian visual culture of the 1980s.
